Leitrim councillor expresses disappointment in delay of works to N16

A Leitrim Councillor has said he is ‘disappointed’ with the news that the motorists who use the N16 between Sligo and Manorhamilton must wait until 2019 at the earliest, before any major upgrades can take place on the Sligo side the road.

This follows confirmation from Sligo County Council that quite a lot of preparation work is needed to be done, before funding can be secured from Transport Infrastructure Ireland.

The council says the long term plan is to upgrade the road by removing a number of bad bends.

Fine Gael Councillor Sean McDermott says that the current state of the road means people avoid it, which is having an adverse affect on the local economy.

He said the upgrade of the road is of utmost importance given the number of people who use the road.
