Crash victim from Sligo Town family

One of the three women who tragically died as a result of a horrific traffic accident which occured early yesterday morning near Ardee, Co Louth, was from a well-known Sligo Town family.

Sixty-nine year old Margaret McGonigle, from Castlereagh, Bruckless, was a member of the McKenna family from St Brigid’s Place in Sligo, the youngest child of the late Mai and Gully McKenna.

Her father was on the first Sligo Rovers team to win a trophy, the Free State Junior Cup, in 1929.

The late Mrs McGonigle’s daughter, 39-year old Mairead Mundy, of Ballyloughan, Bruckless, also died in the accident, as did 37-year old Rachel Battles, from Ballyloughan.

The crash happened at Aclint Bridge, on a stretch of road that is particularly dangerous.
