Donegal continues to have one of the highest numbers of people killed on roads



Donegal has the fourth highest number of deaths on the roads after Dublin, Meath and Mayo.

The Road Safety Authority has issued new figures today showing six of the 77 road fatalities so far this year have been in the North West counties.

Five people have already lost their lives in Donegal this year while one person has died on the roads in Sligo.

While the number of people killed has in fact decreased compared to the same period last year, the RSA is warning that if the monthly average continues 78 more people will lose their lives by the end of the year.

Earlier today, Road Safety Officer in Donegal Brian Farrell was commenting on the increased incidents of young people doing ‘donuts’ on main national primary routes.

He says that some of these young people are actually closing off roads to carry out these manoevres.

Speaking on North West Today, he said that this is just one of a number of road safety initiatives they are trying to bring attention to with July and August some of the most dangerous on our roads:
