More than 2,000 sign online petition for greenway

An online petition calling for the provision of a 125 kilometre greenway from Athenry to Collooney has collected over two thousand signatures.

The petition was launched in March of this year by Western Rail Trail Campaign, who are campaigning for the stretch of disused railway between both towns to be used as both a cycling and walking path.

The group say the majority of those who have signed the petition are from the areas in which the greenway would pass through. They say this shows strong local support for the proposal.

The group has also urged the public to participate in submissions to the Department of Transport in favour of the greenway proposal.

Speaking to Ocean FM News, Brendan Quinn, of the Western Rail Trail Campaign said the group are encouraged by the public support they’ve received so far.
