Leitrim councillor hits out at decision not to allocate the county more SNAs

A Leitrim councillor has hit out at the fact that the county is the only one in the region not to have been given an increase in the number of special needs assistants for its schools.

Independent Councillor Des Guckian says Leitrim has long been the forgotten county in a lot of areas and it’s sad to see that once it’s been left behind.

Donegal has been given 44 extra SNAs, giving it almost 700 in total.

Sligo will get 12 more, giving it 152.

But County Leitrim’s allocation remains the same, at 65.

The assistants provide special help to pupils who need it in primary schools.

Des Guckian says it’s vital this help is available before students to on to second level.
