Cathaoirleach says a solution to the Connaughton Road situation will soon be found

The newly elected cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council says he thinks a solution to the ongoing impasse over accommodation for a Traveller family living in a Sligo Town car park will soon be found.

Members of the extended McGinley family have been living in caravans in the car park, on Connaughton Road, for decades.

Recently, the longrunning issue was highlighted again after council staff supported by gardai attended at the car park on two occasions to carry out work.

The Traveller family claims they have not been offered suitable accommodation while the council says unacceptable activities, such as bonfires and the burning of cables, are taking place in what is a public car park.

Fianna Fail Councillor Seamus Kilgannon says it’s now his gut feeling the situation will soon be resolved.
