UK’s withdrawal from fisheries convention indicates hard Brexit, according to Donegal TD

The UK’s decision to withdraw from the London Fisheries Convention indicates that they are preparing for a hard Brexit, according to one Donegal TD.

The convention grants rights to neighbouring countries to fish in each other’s six to 12 mile fishing zones based on historic fishing activity.

The Irish fishing fleet has access to parts of the UK zone, as has the UK fleet to parts of the Irish zone.

Donegal Fianna Fail TD Pat The Cope Gallagher who is also the party’s spokesperson on fisheries, says the decision is an indication that Ireland must prepare for a hard Brexit.

He also says that although it is disappointing that the UK Government has decided to take this step, it is they who could feel the greater effect when such a move takes place.
