Calls for Government to reinstate administration of Bereavement Grant to Sligo

A Sligo TD has called on the Taoiseach to restore the administration of the Bereavement Grant to the Department of Social Protection offices in Sligo, should the grant be re-introduced.

The allocation is a once-off payment which assists families with the costs of funerals. The grant was discontinued a number of years ago under the Fine Gale/Labour Government.

Sligo Fianna Fail TD Marc MacSharry says that Taoiseach Leo Varadkar committed to re-instating the grant during his campaign to become leader of Fine Gael earlier this year.

The administration department which dealt with the grant had been situated in Sligo.

Speaking to Ocean FM News, Deputy MacSharry says the Taoiseach must make good on his promise and confirm the return of the grant. He also wants the Taoiseach to indicate whether the grant applications will be dealt with in Sligo.
