Sligo County Council to reduce housing estate speed limits from next year

New bye-laws which will reduce the speed limit in residential estates run by Sligo County Council to 30 kilometres per hour will come into effect next year.

The law will apply from January 1st, 2018 with signage due to be erected in all relevant estates.

The move has been welcomed by Sligo Sinn Fein Councillor Thomas Healy who says the measure will enhance safety for those living in such estates.

However, Councillor Healy says the speed limits should be lowered even further, to 20 kilometres per hour. Councilor Healy was part of a campaign group to introduce a law to reduce the limits to 20 kilometres per hour – known as Jake’s Law.

Under the new legislation, the new speed limits will only apply to estates under the control of the council. Councillor Healy told Ocean FM News this is a concern.
