Donegal TD ‘not surprised’ the south of the county has remained in Sligo/Leitrim

A Donegal TD says he’s not surprised that the south of the county has remained in the Sligo Leitrim constituency.

Yesterday’s constituency commission review recommends that south Donegal from Laghey down remains with Sligo Leitrim.

The new report which was commissioned following last year’s census leaves south Donegal in Sligo Leitrim, adds a portion of North Roscommon and removed all of west Cavan from the constituency.

Independent Donegal TD Thomas Pringle who was affected by the break-up of the Donegal constituency last time round says he’s not surprised but is happy no other parts of Donegal were moved into Sligo Leitrim:

It has also recommended that a population of over 7800 people in the north Roscommon area will also vote in Sligo Leitrim in the next Dail election.

It’s good news for Fine Gael Senator Frank Feighan who lives in Boyle and had his area carved up when the old Roscommon South Leitrim constituency reverted back to Sligo Leitrim in 2012.

He confirmed today that he intends to seek a nomination to run for the party next time round.

He says the addition of the north Roscommon area makes sense:

However, Sligo TD Marc MacSharry is not happy and has called for a constitutional referendum to give the people a say on this issue.

He says rural communities are being carved up and soon all the TDs will be based in the East:
