Public meeting to be held over the spelling of Enniscrone

A public meeting will take place in the Ocean Sands Hotel in Enniscrone this Thursday evening to discuss the spelling of the town’s name.

The spelling of the West Sligo town has caused much confusion, even in the area itself. It differs on many sign posts and maps from the anglicised version which is spelled with an ‘E’, to both Irish versions which are spelled with an ‘I’.

But now locals and business owners want the one spelling to be used across the board.

Speaking to Ocean FM’s North West Today, David Tuffy, Chairman of the Enniscrone Community Development Company said the issue is having an effect on attracting people to the town due to the confusion over the spelling.

He explained that the group’s plan is to put the final decision on the spelling to a public vote.
