An emergency fund for tillage farmers is to be introduced

An announcement is expected in the coming days in relation to serious losses sustained by tillage farmers in last year’s harvest.

The scheme was approved by the Department of Agriculture and is now in the hands of the Department of Public Expenditure according to Independent TD, Michael Fitzmaurice.

Deputy Fitzmaurice said that ‘while checks and balances should be in place, tillage farmers who suffered serious losses should be compensated without delay and without too many rules and regulations getting in the way.’

It is reported that the maximum amount that can be given per farmer is €15,000.

Speaking to Ocean FM, Deputy Fitzmaurice said that parts of the West of Ireland were badly hit.
