Sligo Traveller Project says Connaughton road events will lead to a break-down in trust



A spokesperson for the Sligo Traveller Project says families living at the Connaughton road car-park were aware that the Council would take action to remove a fence there yesterday.

However, Bernadette Maughan says that she does not agree with the manner in which the work was carried out.

Up to 12 Gardai and Council officials attended the car-park along with contractors to carry out the work.

However, at least one person was detained and three others had to be removed to hospital after they tried to prevent the work going ahead.

The Council says that the work to remove the fence and height control bar was sanctioned to go ahead following discussions with the McGinley family living there.

Ms Maughan says she feels what happened was not any way to build trust between the parties:
