Galway United moved off the foot of the table thanks to a 1-1 draw at Sligo Rovers last night.

Former Rovers defender Stephen Folan cancelled out Jonah Ayunga’s strike as the home side drew for the fourth time in their last five games.

The opener arrived after ten minutes, with Ayunga showing skill inside the area to turn his man and slip the ball under goalkeeper Conor Winn.

Prior to that, Michael Leahy had a sight of goal from Kieran Sadlier’s free-kick, but his effort looped over the top.

Vinny Faherty and Kevin Devaney threatened for Galway in response, and they got their reward when Folan prodded home the breaking ball from close range following a long throw-in.

Liam Martin flashed a shot from the edge of the box narrowly wide as Rovers looked to get back in front before the break, but Galway survived.

Sadlier was presented with the best opportunity of an uneventful second half, but opted to hit it first time on the volley inside the area when he maybe could have taken an extra touch to control it.

But Galway were reduced to ten men in injury-time when Marc Ludden was shown a second yellow card.
