Countess Mountbatten, survivor of 1979 attack, dies in England



The death has occurred in England of Countess Patricia Mountbatten, one of those who survived the IRA bomb attack on her father Earl Mountbatten’s boat in Mullaghmore, Co Sligo, in August 1979.

Aged 93, she died on Tuesday at her home in Mersham in Kent.

She was a first cousin of the Queen’s husband, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and was godmother to Prince Charles.

Her son, 14-year old Nicholas Knatchbull and her mother-in-law Lady Brabourne also died in the 1979 attack in Mullaghmore, as did 15-year old Paul Maxwell.

The late Countess Mountbatten was rescued from the water, badly injured, requiring 120 stitches to her face.
