Rural text scheme numbers soar

Rural areas are leading the way when it comes to tackling crime, according to a new report from the Gardai.

New figures from the Garda Crime Prevention Centre of Excellence show today that the number of subscribers to text alert schemes nationwide has doubled with rural counties showing the strongest figures.

The Sligo Leitrim Garda division has the fourth highest percentage of people signed up to text alert schemes in the country.

There are now 46 schemes in the two counties with almost 13,000 subscribers.

Donegal have 29 schemes and almost 8000 subscribers.

Vanessa Clarke, the regional community alert development officer for Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal says she’s not surprised by the figures:

Sergeant Amanda Flood of the national office says that while rural counties are leading the way it’s very much a urban rural effort and it’s good news to see the figures doubling since 2014.
