The leader of Fine Gael in Leitrim Cllr John McCartin has confirmed in a statement this evening that the Leitrim members have decided to back Leo Varadkar in the leadership race.

The Fine Gael members of Leitrim County Council have unanimously decided to support Leo Varadkar in the Fine Gael Leadership election.
Having discussed the matter at length, we have concluded that Deputy Varadkar’s balance of youth and experience along with his unequaled ability make him the ideal candidate to lead the party and the country.
Since his election to Dáil Éireann and his subsequent appointment to cabinet, Deputy Varadkar has always been accessible to us as councillors. He has an in-depth knowledge of the issues facing local councillors and is a consistent advocate for regional infrastructural development.
We would like to wish both candidates well in the campaign and we hope that the contest will reinvigorate the party.
We would like to stress that Simon Covney enjoys huge support and respect among the councillors in Leitrim and we can say with certainty that regardless of the outcome of this contest, Fine Gael will have, by far, the best party leader on this island.
