Chemotherapy drug shortage “must never happen again”



A Sligo cancer campaigner says the government needs to ensure that the shortage of chemotherapy drugs affecting patients never happens again.

The Saolta Hospital Group has confirmed to Ocean FM News today that treatment for 17 patients at Sligo University Hospital had to be deferred this week as a result of the problem.

A spokesperson said the internal drug compounding facility in Sligo is closed until next Tuesday for essential maintenance.

No patients of Letterkenny University Hospital have been affected according to Saolta.

Baxter Healthcare, the US drug company at the source of the shortage has this week apologised to patients and medics saying that production would resume next week.
