Sligo council not commenting on fire inspections because investigation is ongoing

Sligo County Council says it is not in a position to provide a report on inspections of an apartment building in Sligo Town, in which two men recently lost their lives as a result of a fire, because investigations are still ongoing.

Independent Councillor Declan Bree had sought a report at this week’s meeting of the council about inspections on the building in Market Street.

The two men who died — a father and son — were on the second floor of the three-storey building.

The fire occurred in a first-floor apartment more than two weeks ago.

Responding to Cllr Bree, council Director of Services Bartley Gavin said both the gardai and Sligo Fire Services are carrying out investigations.

He said that because these are not complete, the council is not in a position at this time to provide the comprehensive report that Cllr Bree has asked for.

Cllr Bree says it has been reported that there was no alert or warning from fire or smoke alarms.

He says it has also been reported that when a number of residents used the fire escape, the metal structure collapsed.
