Weather has created ‘perfect’ conditions for forest fires, says Coillte

Current weather conditions have created ‘a perfect storm’ for forest fires, according to Coillte.

There have already been major fires throughout Sligo, including on the border areas with Roscommon and Leitrim, as well as in Donegal and Fermanagh.

Sligo County Council has warned repeatedly that so-called ‘controlled burning’ is prohibited.

Firefighters are using helicopters to dump water on a large fire in the country’s biggest forest in Connemara, Co Galway.

The blaze in Cloosh Valley has already destroyed one in four trees in the forest.

Ciaran Fallon, Communications Director with Coillte, was asked how many fires are burning at the moment on Coillte owned land.
