North West MEP leads way in bringing in paid leave for carers



A North West MEP who’s a longtime advocate for carers is welcoming a proposal to provide them with paid leave for the first time in Ireland.

The proposal has yet to be approved by the European Parliament.

MEP Marian Harkin, who is founder and chairperson of the Parliament’s Carers’ Interest Group, says she has, for many years, been calling for paid leave for carers.

Although the initial proposal is for only five days paid leave a year, she says it’s an important step in recognising the work of carers, particularly family carers.

She told Ocean FM News the day of the announcement of the proposal was one of her proudest in the European Parliament:
