On Inishmurray, a sandy beach where once there were rocks

A sandy beach has appeared on an island off the coast of North Sligo where, in living memory, a beach has never before been seen.

It’s at Inishmurray, the ancient monastic island more renowned for its rocky edges than for smooth sandy beaches.

The new beach is near a landing spot that boats use when visiting Inishmurray, a favourite haunt for archaeologists, historians and bird watchers.

News of the appearance of the new beach follows the return of a beach at Achill, Co Mayo, which disappeared more than 30 years ago.

There, it’s at the island village of Dooagh where the ocean has deposited thousands of tons of sand, shells and pebbles in the past few weeks.

Keith Clarke from Sligo operates Inishmurray Island Trips aboard his vessel, the ‘Fiona T.’

He has been telling Ocean FM News what has happened.
