Easkey forest fire has been contained by Sligo Fire Service

The forest fire in Easkey that has been burning since yesterday morning has successfully been contained by Sligo Fire Service after working through the night.  A unit from Tubbercurry remains at the scene.
Gaining access to the area proved to be the most difficult challenge as a large area does not have road access, specifically between Lough Easkey and Lough Talt.
A helicopter from the Air Corps was there from 3pm to 8pm on Saturday fighting the
fire with ‘Bambi’ buckets which has a water capacity of 1,000 litres. Winds eased overnight which helped and the fire is confined to isolated pockets where Coillte has arranged for a helicopter to stay at the scene to deal with these pockets.
There have been a number of fires affecting the region this week, Geevagh/Ballyfarnon area was attended to on Friday were it was contained by 11pm that night. Earlier in the week, there were major outbreaks on Killery mountain near Ballintogher, on the Sligo/Leitrim border, as well as gorse fires in parts of County Donegal.
