TD critical of conditions in unit at St John’s Hospital in Sligo

A Sligo/Leitrim TD has described conditions in a unit at St John’s Hospital in Sligo late last year as ‘shameful.’

Sinn Fein Deputy Martin Kenny was commenting following recently-published  findings by the Mental Health Commission after an unannounced inspection.

Deputy Kenny says the Commission found 13 problems — seven of which were rated ‘high risk’ — in the rehabilitation and recovery mental health unit, which was built 25 years ago, and formerly known as the Alzheimer’s Unit.

He says findings included chipped tiles and peeling paint, broken showers, an ongoing smell in two bedrooms, and issues in relation to staffing.

Ocean FM News is awaiting a response from the HSE.

Deputy Kenny says the unit is now in, what he called, ‘transition.’
