Minister to launch urban renewal plan in Sligo

Sligo town will be showing how it is leading the way when Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Mary Mitchell O’Connor visits this afternoon to launch a new plan for renewal of town centres throughout the country..

The plans are being implemented in towns outside of Dublin that have not yet had significant economic recovery.

Minister Mitchell O’Connor says the aim is to enhance their efforts or to start them on the path towards sustainable town centre renewal.

Already, Sligo’s Business Improvement District has a number of plans in place for the coming months.

They include having free Wi-Fi in the Town Centre for the summer period, a carparking Golden Ticket to be given away each month this summer which will allow for free parking for a year, and a website called ‘Meet in Sligo’ to be developed in conjunction with hotels in the town.

A Sligo App has already been developed.

These four projects will have in excess of €100,000 invested by the BID in the coming years.

Finbarr Filan of Sligo BIDS says that when it comes to town centre planning, Sligo is now ahead of most towns in the country, a message the minister will be hearing during her visit to Sligo today:
