Means-testing may be used to keep people out of nursing homes

Those who want to stay in their own home as they age may have to contribute to their care from now on.

A new report says it may be necessary to ask for payments and introduce means testing to keep the elderly out of nursing homes.

Researchers from the Health Research Board have been looking at the cost of statutory care schemes in other european counties and have recommended people should be asked how much they can pay and what help they need.

The findings of the report will be published by the Minister for Older People Helen McEntee today.
