Census 2016: Only Donegal and Mayo record a drop in population



Donegal is one of two counties in the country that has seen a fall in its population in the last five years.

That’s according to the first official report of Census 2016 released today.

It also shows that Sligo, Leitrim and Cavan are among six counties with the most elderly people living alone.

Overall, Ireland’s population stood at more than four and a half million in April of last year.

That’s an increase of 3.8% from April 2011.
Donegal has a population of 159,192, a fall of 1.2%.

The county has over 79,000 men and over 80,000 women.

The average age of the county’s population is 38.5 years.

The population of Sligo increased by 0.2% to 65,535. That’s made up of 32,365 males and 33,170 females.

The average age of people in Sligo is just over 39.

Leitrim’s population just about stood still over the past five years; it’s just over 32,044, an increase of just 0.8%.

There are over 16,000 males in Leitrim and just under 16,000 females. Their average age in Leitrim is 39.8 years.,

Overall, Connacht grew by 1.5%. Leinster grew fastest than the State overall, increasing by more than 5% in the five years ending April last year.

Nine counties, stretching down through the midlands and across to the south west grew, by less than 2%.

The average age of the country’s population in April 2016 was just over 37 years.

The number of men aged 65 and over increased by 22% while women aged 65 and over rose by almost 17%.

The number of divorced people in the country between 2011 and 2016 increased by more than 16,000 while those who seperated rose by almost 2,000.

The average number of children per family was 1.38.
