Sligo Councillors suggest the term social housing should be changed

People living in social housing are facing significant stigmatisation because of their position, according to a new report.

At this week’s meeting of Sligo County Council which discussed submissions and amendments for a new county development plan, some councillors suggested that the term ‘social housing’ be changed.

Now, the organisation Cluid say people in social housing are being unfairly depicted as spongers.

Their report found many of these people lie about their address when applying for a job, because of fear of discrimination.

Clúid’s Head of Policy, Simon Brooke, says it often leaves them feeling stigmatised.
