Sligo remembers Chuck Berry’s 1981 visit

With tributes being paid from all over the world to the American rock ‘n’ roll performer Chuck Berry who died on Saturday, people around Sligo have been recalling his visit in August 1981.

The famed guitarist and singer, who was aged 90, came to perform at a musical festival in the village of Ballisodare.

On the occasion, he played for 15 minutes more than his contracted 45 minutes — something he usually never did.

The festival, beginning in 1977, was organised by brothers Philip and Kevin Flynn, eventually drawing audiences of more than 20,000 people.

Philip recalls a musician who electrified the crowd — but also one who was quite particular in his requirements.
