Bishop Doran: Casey’s mistakes revealed human weaknesses of Bishops in Ireland for the first time



The Catholic Bishop of Elphin says the ‘mistakes’ of the late Eamon Casey made people realise for the first time that Bishops were not perfect.

The former Bishop of Kerry and Galway died yesterday at the age of 89.

He resigned amid controversy in 1992, after it was discovered he’d fathered a child with American divorcée Annie Murphy.

However, he was also well-known for his work with the poor, young people and the unemployed.

Speaking to Ocean FM News today, Bishop Kevin Doran said he first got the know him while he was was Chaplain in Univeristy College Dublin and Bishop Casey was Chairman of Trocaire.

He says the controversy that emerged in 1992 did, however, give people a more realistic view of the clergy in that they are open to making mistakes like everyone else:
