Report on impact of social welfare changes on seasonal workers due shortly

Independent Donegal TD Thomas Pringle is hoping to see a return to pre-2012 social welfare measures for seasonal workers in South Donegal.

The minister for social protection Leo Varadkar has said a report is being undertaken looking at the impact the eligibility criteria of social welfare payments is having on seasonal and part time workers.

It’s expected to be completed by the beginning of April before being presented to a joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection.

Deputy Pringle called for the report as an amendment to the Social Welfare Bill specifically looking at the impact of the current rate of €12.70 for subsidiary employment on workers saying it would cost just 33 million euro to reverse the cuts.

He says it has particularly hit the fishing industry hard in Donegal.
