Sligo principal says mental health issues are leading to higher drug-use

A school principal in Sligo believes mental health has a strong role to play in drug use by young people.

According to a recent survey into drug-use and gambling, almost 30% of respondents under the age of 34 in the North West said they have used an illegal drug at some stage.

Cannabis and ecstasy had the highest use among young people.

Summerhill college principal Paul Keogh believes exam stress, looking for a sense of belonging and a lack of understanding around addiction can lead people to trying drugs.

He says it’s ok for young people to ask for help.
