School bus and railway services may come under threat



School bus and railway services will come under threat if industrial action goes ahead following the breakdown in talks between Bus Eireann and trade unions.

SIPTU and the NBRU had been meeting with officials from the semi-state company in an attempt to resolve a pay dispute.

In a statement Bus Eireann confirmed they are looking for savings of 12 million euro from payroll by May or the company will become insolvent.

SIPTU’s Willie Noone told Ocean FM they cannot support that and strike action now looks inevitable.

He says it’s not only Bus Eireann services under threat if the action goes ahead.

Meanwhile Representatives from the NTA told the Oireachtas Transport Committee this morning that rural areas won’t be left behind if services are cut.

Three routes are under threat of being axed entirely, the Westport-Athlone, Dublin-Derry and Dublin-Clonmel services.

The NTA’s CEO Anne Graham says if cuts to services or routes happen, they will examine the towns left behind to provide alternative services:
