Mandate official claims Tesco wants to get rid of union in its stores

A Mandate union official says he believes supermarket giant Tesco is trying to get rid of the union in its stores.

Ciaran Campbell has made the claim as it emerges that 14 Tesco workers from Sligo are taking part in an ongoing strike in Longford.

Strike action at the Sligo store was called off this week because of what Mandate described as ‘a technical error’ in the ballot for the industrial action.

Sligo workers, as well as those in Ballina, will now be reballoted.

Although the dispute is over proposed changes to contracts for more than 250 long-serving workers, Mr Campbell claims more is at stake.
