Presence of Super Trawlers off Donegal coast raised at European level

The issue of the presence of super trawlers off the Irish coast including off Donegal has been raised at a European level today.

It was recently highlighted by Independent TD in Donegal Thomas Pringle who said their presence is jeopardising the livelihood of smaller fishermen by inadvertently destroying some of their gear.

Today Sinn Fein MEP Liadh Ni Riada raised the issue in Europe calling for increased scrutiny of super trawlers around Irish waters.

She says independent observers should be present on board these massive boats to inspect their activities.

She says the current system of inspection by the Irish Navy and the Sea Fishing Protection Authority, the SFPA is inadequate when it comes to super trawlers.
