Locum oncologist appointed at Letterkenny University Hospital

A locum oncologist has been secured for Letterkenny University Hospital.

The Saolta Hospital Group has confirmed to Ocean FM News that a second locum has been secured to fill the position until the 6th of March.

There has been concern in Donegal over the past number of weeks with 51 patients at least being referred to Galway for chemotherapy treatment due to problems filling the second consultant oncologist post at the hospital.

In a statement this week, the general manager of the hospital Sean Murphy said that the post would be filled by a locum from the 6th of March and that oncology services would then return to normal in Letterkenny.

However, yesterday evening Minister Joe McHugh confirmed the post has now been filled.

The Saolta Hospital Group has confirmed this is the case and has got cover for this post to bridge the gap until the 6th of March.

This has enabled the LUH Medical Oncology Service to resume, accepting new referrals to its service as of Monday this week.

It also says that the patients who were referred to Galway will be returned to LUH.

However this will be on a phased basis over the next number of weeks in order not to interrupt patient treatment.
