Summerhill overcome Sligo Grammar in Senior Cup

The local bragging rights in Sligo schools rugby belong to Summerhill College, for the time-being at least, as they defeated hosts Sligo Grammar School by 32 points to 19 in a pulsating tie in front of a massive crowd at The Mall.

Summerhill had a blistering first half and led by 22 points to nil at the half-time break despite being reduced in personnel when Kevin Conlan was shown a red card.

Gary Golden scored an early try, while Ross Hickey went over twice, and Brian Cox added two conversions and a penalty.

But the home side bounced back in the second period, with Cuba Wojtkowicz scoring two tries and Niall Gray also crossing the whitewash, with Gray also kicking two conversions.

Another Cox penalty kept Summerhill ahead, 25-19, and they rallied in the closing stages to claim a fourth try through Brendan Cunningham, with Cox converting again to seal a 13-point win for ‘The Hill’.

Summerhill top Pool 2 as a result, while the Grammar also advance to the semi-finals as pool runners-up.

Colaiste Iognaid currently top Pool 1, with Garbally College in second spot.
