Trolley crisis: Lack of agency nurses in Sligo and Donegal



A consultant in Letterkenny says even if more beds are opened at hospitals in the north west there’s noone to staff them.

Orthopaedic surgeon Dr Peter O’Rourke at Letterkenny University Hospital says elective surgeries continue to be cancelled due to the overcrowding crisis.

The numbers on trolleys are especially bad in Letterkenny this week where there were 38 patients on trolleys on Tuesday; it’s still at 25 today while 12 are waiting in Sligo.

Dr. O’Rourke says bed capacity continues to be the problem.

But he says Sligo and Donegal do not have the same access to agency staff like hospitals in Dublin and Cork and so staffing is becoming a bigger issue:
