Fianna Fail councillor wants free EU wi-fi initiative rolled out across Sligo

A Sligo councillor is hoping to see the county take advantage of a free wi-fi initiative being launched by the European Union.

Fianna Fail’s Keith Henry raised the motion at a recent meeting of Sligo County Council to apply for the WIFI4EU initative which will be made available from June of this year.

He says this would give Sligo the chance to promote free wi-fi connectivity for locals and visitors in public spaces such as parks and libraries.

The motion to apply was passed by the council and welcomed by Councillor Henry’s party colleague councillor Paul Taylor as something which could help improve broadband in the county.

Councillor Henry says it will be available in areas not covered by the national broadband plan.
