Councils continue to monitor weather

Most of the country escaped very severe snow and ice this morning, although weather warnings remain in place up to 6pm tomorrow.

The cold snap has been affecting the UK more severely, with around 80 flights cancelled at London Heathrow, because of snow and strong winds.

In the north west, the Councils are continuing to monitor road conditions.

Motorists are nevertheless asked to be careful when travelling today and snow and sleet showers continue to be forecase with a weather warning for snow, ice and freezing temperatures in place in Donegal, Sligo and Leitrim until tomorrow evening.

This morning the Barnesmore gap and around Sligo town were the worst affected areas.
