‘Education costs money and needs to be funded’

Alternative ways of funding third level education have to be looked at according to the European Universities Central Application Support Service.

The service known as EUNiCAS is holding an information evening for Sligo students at the Clayton Hotel on Thursday to advise them on opportunities to study in Holland.

Guy Flouch of the Irish-based EUNiCAS says pupils who for example did not get the course they want have an opportunity to study in the Netherlands.

The Dutch government provides loans to students including Irish students which they then pay back over 35 years to the Dutch government.

It’s the type of loan scheme that has been recommended here in Ireland under the new Cassells report which is currently being considered by government to come up with alternatives ways of funding third level institutions which are currently facing a funding crisis according to the Higher Education Authority.

Speaking to Ocean FM, Mr. Flouch said that the loan scheme works well in Holland:

Seven Dutch Universities are visiting Sligo on Thursday as part of the Eunicas event to speak to prospective students and their families.

200 participants from the North-West are already registered for the event which starts at 18.30 tomorrow and and is free.
