Winning start for new Leitrim boss, but Sligo and Donegal lose out



Brendan Guckian got his term as Leitrim senior football boss off to a positive start, with a comprehensive defeat of GMIT in the FBD League yesterday.

It finished 5-20 to 2-10 in favour of the home side in Mohill.

Elsewhere, Galway came from behind to beat Sligo by 13 points to ten at a windy Enniscrone.

Elsewhere Roscommon beat IT Sligo by 6-21 to 0-14 and NUIG defeated a depleted Mayo beat by 1-21 to 2-16.

In the Dr McKenna Cup, Ryan McHugh scored a late goal to help UUJ beat a spirited Donegal U21 team by a point, 2-20 by 4-13, in Ballybofey.

Brendan McCole, Ethan O’Donnell, Eoghan Ban Gallagher and Micheál Carroll all netted for Donegal, and boss Declan Bonner was proud of their efforts. He spoke to Ocean FM’s Pauric Byrne…

In the other game in Donegal’s group, Cavan beat holders Tyrone by 1-13 to 0-12.

In the other groups, Fermanagh lost by a point to Monaghan, the same margin by which Derry beat Armagh and St Mary’s College beat Antrim.
And Down beat Queen’s by three points.

In ladies football, Sligo beat NUIG by 2-10 to 0-11 in Dangan yesterday in the Connacht Winter League and will face Galway in next week’s decider.
