HIQA say some new maternity standards will be implemented immediately

Some of the new maternity services standards will be implemented immediately according to the group who put them together.

A spokesperson for HIQA confirmed the news after Sligo based medical negligence solicitor Damien Tansey called for the immediate implementation of the new standards.

HIQA says the new standards describe what safe, high-quality maternity services should look like, and will help to ensure that services are meeting the necessary outcomes for people using their facilities.

Women and babies availing of the service in Sligo and Letterkenny hospitals will find under the new standards that the care given will be regularly reviewed to ensure it remains appropriate for all needs at all times.

Linda Weir is the programme director on the development of the standards and she says a number of them don’t require any resource implications and can be implemented straight away.
