AA survey: Higher taxes on fuel hitting rural motorists most

Most motorists in the north west are spending between €25 and €50 a week on fuel and are also driving some of the longest distances.

That’s according to a new survey from AA Ireland which reveals that rural dwellers are driving further and of course spending more on fuel per week than their more urban counterparts.

The survey shows that drivers in areas like the north west put in longer shifts behind the wheel, with over 10% of drivers in Ulster and 8% in Connacht averaging over 30,000 kilometres a year compared to just over 3% of Dublin drivers.

It also shows that unsurprisingly rural drivers are spending more on fuel with nearly half of drivers in Donegal spending between €25 and €50 on fuel a week and over 35% in Connacht.

While just over 9% of Dublin drivers spend €10 or less a week on fuel.

The AA says the high taxtion on fuel therefore affects people in more rural areas more harshly.
