Increased payments sought for farmers on marginal land



The Irish Natura and Hill Farmers Association says they are making a very strong case to increase payments for farmers on marginalised land.

Over 75% of land in Ireland is deemed ‘disadvantaged’ by european standards and therefore qualifies for the new Areas of Natural Constraint payments which are being renegotiated as part of the CAP in the coming year.

It comes as farm incomes especially in the west of Ireland continue to struggle.

Colm O’Donnell of the INHFA says farmers can expect to get their Glas payments this week.

The organisation was given a commitment that 85% of the payments would be made this week from the Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed at a meeting with the organisation recently.

However Colm O’Donnell says they will be launching a campaign in the next two months to ensure farmers get a significant in ANC payments:
