Donegal senator resigns FF whip following SIPO ruling

A spokesman for Fianna Fail says Donegal Senator Brian O’Domhnaill has resigned his party’s whip in a row over expenses claims.

O Domhnaill is now no longer a member of the Fianna Fail Seanad group or the Fianna Fail parliamentary party.

It, in effect, means, he will continue as an Independent in the Seanad.

However, he remains a member of Fianna Fail.

His resignation of the Fianna Fail whip follows a finding by the Standards in Public Office Commission that the senator intentionally contravened ethics legislation when he claimed expenses while serving as a county councillor a decade ago.

The watchdog found against Ó Domhnaill following an inquiry into his claims for travelling and subsistence expenses from two separate bodies for the same dates in 2006.

Mr Ó Domhnaill submitted claims to both Donegal County Council and Údarás na Gaeltachta.

There is no response this morning from Senator O Domhnaill or his office.
