Teething problems with Leitrim’s new traffic lights

Motorists passing through the north Leitrim town of Manorhamilton have called for the settings on the new traffic lights in the town to be examined.

It comes as motorists and pedestrians are getting used to the new lights at the dangerous junction of Main Steet in the town and the N16 Sligo to Blacklion road.

The junction on the N16 at Main Street in Manorhamnilton has been discussed for years.

Numerous motions have been put down at meetings of Leitrim County Council, with several meetings having taken place between council staff and local representatives in the effort to find a solution.

That solution eventually turned out to be traffic lights, which were switched on last Wednesday evening.

Generally, the new lights have been welcomed at what has been a dangerous junction for both motorists and pedestrians.

However, there have been some complaints about the occasional build-up of traffic in Main Street in Manorhamilton as motorists wait for the light to turn green.

Yesterday evening, Ocean FM News timed the lights for motorists waiting on Main Street.

They switched from green to orange after just over ten seconds.

The red light remained on for about 52 seconds.

But most motorists who spoke to Ocean FM didn’t seem to mind the wait, saying safety was more important.

These motorists gave their opinion to Ocean FM News:
