Death forms linked to Sligo’s ‘Noble Six’ to be auctioned next week



A number of historical items with links to Sligo and Donegal will go under the hammer at Fonsie Mealy Auctioneers’ annual Christmas sale in Dublin next week.

They include items related to Sligo’s Noble Six, the six men killed during the Civil War on Benbulben Mountain in north Sligo.

The auction will take place on Tuesday, December 13th in The Gresham Hotel and includes more than 800 lots.

One of the lots, Lot 392, relates to Sligo’s Noble Six.

It’s a collection of eight pre-printed casualty or death forms relating to deaths in the Sligo area during the Civil War.

According to the auctioneers, these IRA casualty forms are rare and, as a collection, are expected to reach at least €500 to €700.

Another lot, Number 361, is a minute book of the County Sligo Gaelic League.

It’s expected to fetch between €225 and €300.

Among items for sale with a Donegal link are a collection of letters from a mid-19th Century Donegal merchant in Ballyshannon.

It’s a collectionn of 40 documents written by William Allingham to his son, John.

There’s also an original pencil drawing for four stain-glass windows for the Stations of the Cross windows at the basilica on Lough Derg.

Also on sale will be some correspondence from playwright Brian Friel.

The auction on December 13th in The Gresham Hotel, will start at 10:15am.
