West Sligo lady celebrating 100 years says ‘hard work’ and ‘prayers’ are the secret to a long life



A lady from Skreen who celebrated her 100th birthday at the weekend says hard work and praying is what helped her reach her milestone.

Mrs. Bee Dunphy celebrated her birthday with over hundred people at the weekend.

She was also honoured at a special commemoration held by Sligo IFA in Enniscrone yesterday afternoon as her late husband Joe Dunphy was the head of the IFA in Sligo at the time of the great march to Dublin in 1966 to increase farmer’s rights.

The Easkey man led the Sligo march from Collooney to Merrion square in Dublin where they met thousands of other farming protestors who had also walked to the capital.

Mrs. Dunphy who was born in 1916 says hard work and praying got her through tough times:
