‘Dumbing Down’ of religious education is worrying says Bishop of Elphin

The bishop of Elphin says the ‘dumbing down’ of religious education is a big worry for the catholic church.

His excellency Kevin Doran was speaking after plans for the first ever state curriculum in world religions and ethics for primary schools was stymied by the church.

It has opposed changes to national school curriculums which include more time allocated to other religions put forward by the Education about Religion and Beliefs and Ethics programme.

Bishop Doran says religious education is being placed alongside ethics and civil education when it should be stand alone.

He told Ocean FM parents need to let the government know their thoughts on it
